Your bumper is cracked, your mirror is gone, or someone backed into your door in a parking lot. Before you call your insurer, it's worth knowing that filing isn't always the cheaper path. Here's how to tell the difference in about five minutes.
Your deductible is what you pay before your insurance pays anything. Most policies in California sit between $500 and $1,000. If your repair costs less than your deductible, filing a claim gets you nothing — your insurer pays $0 and you still pay the full repair.
This is the single most common mistake we see. Someone files a claim on an $800 repair with a $1,000 deductible, and the claim is recorded for a payout that never happens.
You can't compare against your deductible without knowing the repair cost. A free photo estimate takes about two minutes from your phone — a wide shot of the vehicle, close-up of the damage, the VIN if you can reach it — and costs nothing. There's no obligation and no claim is opened by asking.
If the estimate comes in under your deductible, we'll tell you. We'd rather lose the insurance job than have you file a claim that pays you nothing.
- The repair is close to or below your deductible.
- The damage is cosmetic and you're comfortable with the cost.
- You've had a recent at-fault claim and you're concerned about your rate at renewal.
- It's a single small panel or bumper with no structural or sensor involvement.
- The repair clearly exceeds your deductible — often anything past $1,500.
- Anyone was injured, or another vehicle or driver is involved.
- The damage touches structure, airbags, or driver-assist sensors. Modern bumpers hide radar and cameras; a "minor" bumper hit can require recalibration that costs more than
the bumper itself.
- The other driver was at fault. If their carrier accepts liability, you may pay nothing
at all — not even your deductible.
An at-fault claim can affect your rate at renewal; a not-at-fault claim usually has far less impact, and comprehensive claims (theft, weather, vandalism) are typically treated differently from collision. Your carrier is the only one who can tell you exactly what a claim does to your specific policy — ask them directly before you file, and ask about your accident-forgiveness status while you're on the phone.
1. Get a free estimate — two minutes, no claim opened, no obligation.
2. Compare it to your deductible.
3. Under the deductible: pay out of pocket.
4. Well over the deductible, or injuries, structure, or another driver involved: file.
5. Somewhere in the middle: call your carrier and ask what the claim does to your renewal.
